Zara Heuristic Evaluation
Overview
For this project, I worked in a team of two and conducted a heuristic evaluation for Zara's e-commerce website to help uncover various usability issues. The goal of this project is to identify and prioritize these issues based on the 10 Usability Heuristics for User Interface Design and then redesign the website with changes that fix the usability issues. Due to the high bounce rate of 29%, we investigated Zara’s website to understand how users may encounter certain usability challenges while performing the task of purchasing a men’s jacket.
Context
This was a 2-week project for BrainStation's UX Design program and was presented to UX experts for feedback and evaluation through a pitch-based presentation.

What is a Heuristic Evaluation?

A heuristic evaluation uncovers usability issues based on 10 broad principles outlined below:

1

Visibility of System Status

The system should always keep the user informed on what is going on through appropriate feedback.

2

Match Between System & Real World

The system should speak the user’s language with words, phrases, and prompts that are familiar.

3

User Control & Freedom

Users often make mistakes, it should be easy to recover from them.

4

Consistency & Standards

Users should not have to wonder if certain words, icons, or fields do the expected thing.

5

Error Prevention

Design should not just correct errors, but be well-crafted so that errors don’t exist in the first place.

6

Recognition Rather Than Recall

Make previously selected options visible so the user doesn’t have to memorize things.

7

Flexibility & Efficiency of Use

Focus on the novice user and cater to the experienced user as well.

8

Aesthetic & Minimalist Design

The design should not contain any information that is irrelevant or rarely needed.

9

Help Recognize & Recover From Errors

Error messages should be displayed in clear language (no codes) and precisely indicate the problem.

10

Help Documentation

Although better to have a system that does not require documentation, it is important to provide some just in case.

Severity Scale

This scale is used to weigh the level of impact that heuristic issues have on overall usability. These range from inconsequential to critical.

We used our own personal judgment to determine where the issues ranked on the scale based on the user base (see Persona below). However, user testing may be more effective in determining accurate ratings.

  • 0 - No Usability Problem

I don't agree that this is a usability problem at all.

  • 1 - Cosmetic Problem Only

Need not be fixed unless extra time is available.

  • 2 - Minor Usability Problem

Fixing this should be given low priority.

  • 3 - Major Usability Problem

Important to fix, so should be given high priority.

  • 4 - Usability Catastrophe

Imperative to fix this before product can be released.

Branding

A key part of this exercise was to make sure that the solutions were designed in accordance with Zara's existing branding to ease integration. This was also a key need found in the user base in order to trust the brand.

Zara's website branding consists of black and white colours, with linear iconography, and the Helvetica Neue typeface.

      Persona & Task Flow

To empathize with the target consumer of Zara's website we developed a proto persona using user information from online blogs and selected the major task flow of finding and purchasing clothing.

      Sam the Shopper

      • "I love online shopping because of the various options at my fingertips."

      • • Likes to browse and be able to find similar options or view specific categories that help narrow their search

        • Prefers the ability to keep track of their search and edit using filters and product summary information

        • Finds that website branding is an important part of understanding the seller's aesthetic and this informs their decision

      Design Prioritization

It was important to not only prioritize usability issues based on the severity scale but also accounting for time and resource constraints. The following design prioritization matrix helped us decide what issues to focus on solving using a dot voting method:

      Usability Issues & Solutions

The following sections uncovers the major usability issues found within the task flow and presents redesigned solutions that fit within brand guidelines. Each section outlines the violated heuristic, severity level, and description of problem with solution.

      Final Remarks

Overall this process has been invaluable in understanding how real-world designs require consistent testing and upkeep to enhance usability. Some of the issues found within Zara's website are especially frustrating for the user base and this can lead to a significant loss for the company.

The 10 usability heuristics do a great job of helping designers empathize with users and find major faults within both the information architecture and interactions within a platform. I hope to continue using these principles to enhance my own designs continuously.

      • Future Directions

        • Look at other task flows that are valuable to the user base such as finding order information

        • Do user testing on new designs to see their effectiveness and uncover any associated usability issues

        • Speak with stakeholders to see how well the solutions align with their company goals and resources while adjusting the solutions accordingly
